Math 401, Summer 2025: Freiwald research project notes
This section collects notes from a summer research project connected to Math 401 and related reading around quantum information, operator theory, and the mathematical background needed to study concentration phenomena in quantum systems.
The notes in this folder appear in two clusters:
T1–T7are topic notes building background material for the project.P1and its side notes (P1_1–P1_3) focus on a paper study track, centered on concentration of measure effects in quantum information.
Background topics
The T* notes cover foundational ideas that support the project, including:
- probability in the language of measure theory
- finite-dimensional and separable Hilbert spaces
- probabilistic ideas in quantum settings
- dynamics in classical and non-commutative systems
- postulates of quantum theory and measurement operations
- basic quantum circuits
These notes function as preparation material for reading and extending the research literature.
Paper study track
The P* notes study Patrick Hayden’s work on concentration of measure effects in quantum information and related tools.
Math401_P1is the main paper note.Math401_P1_1–Math401_P1_3are side notes that expand specific ingredients used in the paper, such as measure concentration, Page’s lemma, and Levy’s concentration theorem.
Navigation
Use the topic notes first if you want the mathematical setup, then move to the paper notes for the research-focused reading path.
